The little farming village got a boost and a name change when the railroad came through in 1871. At the dedication of the new depot, Evan Howell’s grandson named the town Duluth in honor of a little railroad town in Minnesota that had taken a drubbing in Congress. The name stuck, and in the next 100 years Duluth grew from an agricultural hamlet to a populous suburb of metropolitan Atlanta. Duluth was home to Alice Strickland, a prohibitionist and the first woman mayor in Georgia. It was also the site of early genetic engineering that resulted in the ubiquitous white chickens now dominating the poultry industry. The town’s community spirit also built a hospital and inspired a nation to provide medical care to rural areas. It provided the second permanent encampment after Fort Astoria for trappers coming to the Pacific Northwest. When Ewing died without a will, nearby residents gathered to settle Ewing’s estate. This event led directly to the vote at Champoeg to make Oregon part of the United States. The town’s name was given by pioneer Sebastian Brutscher after his Bavarian hometown of Neuburg. Other settlers arrived, and soon Newberg was a thriving pioneer town. Among the new settlers were members of the Friends Church, who set up an academy that is today one of the premier Christian universities in the country. Newberg was also home or way station to two U.S. presidents. Westminster, California, Images of America, Paperback Westminster Colony was founded in 1870 by Presbyterian minister Rev. Lemuel P. Webber. The colony, based on Protestant Christian tenets and temperance, was one of the earliest settlements in what would later become Orange County, California. It developed into an important agricultural area until farmlands gave way to suburban tract homes during the county’s population boom of the late 1950s and 1960s. In 1947, it became the background for the important Mendez v. Westminster case, which helped pave the way for the national dismantling of segregation in schools. A little more than a century after the first settlers arrived in Westminster, Little Saigon became the heart of Orange County’s Vietnamese immigrant community. This latest group of settlers continues to make notable and unique contributions to this historic city.
