Robert Dean Stockwell

New, limited edition, hardcover coffee table book of a collection of the actor and artist Dean Stockwell’s paper and digital collages. Published in 2004, this book was included in the first show of Stockwell’s original works at the R.B. Ravens Gallery in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico (Sept. 3rd – Oct. 31st, 2004). Dean Stockwell’s film career spanned over seven decades and his unique and enduring mark on the world of film is undeniable. What many do not know, however, is the fact that Stockwell was also an incredibly talented and prolific collage artist. Included in the opening pages of this book are numerous testimonials by a host of well known figures in the world of art and entertainment, people such as Walter Hopps, George Herms, Ralph Gibson, Dennis Hopper and Neil Young. Below are a few excerpts from these testimonials: “Stockwell’s life evolved primarily in California. He was a close friend of the late assemblage master Wallace Berman, whose life and nature affected many of us involved there in the arts from the 1950’s on…Dean Stockwell’s collage works are superb. The compositions are varied, inventive and complex and generally take on a mysterious narrative character. His collages have a degree of intensity both in composition and color rarely seen in the work of his contemporaries.” – Walter Hopps “These are the jewels of a great eye and the macho hammer of a politically sensitive being, a sensitivity that tears at every flower opening and flag draped coffin. He’s the real deal. I bought two from this show.” – Dennis Hopper “I’ve been enjoying Dean Stockwell’s art for years. The images he gathers and their juxtaposition to one another have always stimulated me to look deeper…Dean’s art has been part of my music in one way or another since I first met him in Topanga in the 60’s.” – Neil Young This beautiful book of Stockwell’s collage works stands alone as the only compilation of the great actor’s explorations into the world of art. It encapsulates a deeply introspective period in his life (the early 2000s), one marked by exceptional creativity, boundless inspiration and a steadfast dedication to making his mark on a unique and delicate art form. Each of the works included in this collection is a window into the mind, heart and soul of Robert Dean Stockwell.
